iPod Dilemma

This summer, Corrin has the opportunity to earn money to replace her stolen iPod.  But she wants it now.  Of Course.

This was taken from her backpack in school sometime in March.  It has not been seen since.  We thought she just misplaced it somewhere at the house, but after a week or so, we realized it was taken.  Too late to report it or to catch someone with it.  Very sad, as it was a present.

She is having fits over her friends all having one but not her.  We have devised a plan for her to earn money for it, but we (Jeff & I) are not buying her one, no matter the great deal we can get on one.

The issue is not the money, necessarily, but the fact that she doesn't feel she needs to work for it.  She wants to take money out of the bank to pay for it.  This would normally be ok IF she had been earning money all along.  Doing chores, helping out, not complaining.... That has not happened, so I don't feel inclined to pay for an iPod.

We had a deal - she would do chores for money (extra chores that is).  She hasn't done them in 12 weeks, so she has $0.  I think that's fair.  I remind her, suggest things to her, change the jobs around, ignore the fact she is doing nothing.... Nothing works.  Especially her.

I came up with a huge list of extra chores - things I HATE doing.   I put a dollar value on them and a frequency for each week.  I came up with $55 worth of things to do.  That's a lot.  That's a quick way to earn an iPod.

It sounds like a lot, but I got a quote of $180/week to have a cleaning lady.  So I figure I will be coming out ahead if I pay out the $55 and my work will be done.  I think that's more than fair.

I put each job on a craft stick and gave each child a cup.

When they do the job, they get the stick.  They turn in the sticks to get paid.  I think there is a lot of work, but each time they do it, it should get easier.  Here's my list:

  1. Clean pool baskets (2x/day)   $0.50
  2. Walk Usher to stop sign and back  (5x/day)  $0.50
  3. Sort socks & put in people's rooms (2x/week)  $1.00
  4.  Vacuum Kitchen and Living room  (4x/week)  $1.00
  5. Fold towels and put away (unlimited) $0.50
  6. Brush Usher outside (1x/day)  $0.50
  7. Weed a flower bed (unlimited)  $1.00
  8. Write in your thankfulness journal (1x/day) $1.00
  9. Wipe down kitchen cabinets  (2x/week) $0.50
  10. Organize Tupperware drawer (1x/week)  $0.50
  11. Organize Tupperware closet (1x/week)  $0.75
  12. Vacuum Basement  (1x/week)  $1.00
  13. Wipe front doors (4x/week)  $0.50
  14. Vacuum each car 1x/week/car)  $1.00
  15. Wash baseboards - all bathrooms (1x/week)  $1.00
  16. Wash baseboards - 1st floor hall and mudroom (1x/week) $0.50
  17. Wash baseboards - Living room (1x/week) $0.50
  18. Wash baseboards - Kitchen (1x/week) $1.00
  19. Wash baseboards - 2nd floor hallway (1x/week) $0.50
  20. Wash baseboards - Basement (1x/week) $1.50
  21. Wash baseboards - Stairway - both (1x/week) $1.00
I can come up with so many more... Cobwebs, clean screens, dust ceiling fans, dust lights, dust china cabinet, take trash to curb, pick up sticks in yard before mowing... I'm sure you can come up with some too... what do you think??

I don't want to pay them for everything, although it feels like I am.  But I need them to see there is reward in working and helping.  There are things that no one gets paid for... Picking up their stuff around the house, cleaning the mudroom, putting laundry away, dishes, setting the table/clearing the table, picking up the pool stuff, and other responsibilities that we ask them to do.

I am hoping the money reward will help to create habits.  I should pay myself for losing weight... hmmm.....

Chore Ideas

Here are some of the links I looked at to come up with the chore plan:

http://www.aprettylifeinthesuburbs.com/kids-choice-chore-system/

http://itsafabulouslife.com/diy-chore-magnets/

http://www.toiletpaperentrepreneur.com/skill-toolbox/when-raising-an-entrepreneur-or-not-skip-the-allowance/

http://www.cleanmama.net

This is a cool one:  http://247moms.com/2012/03/5-make-your-own-chore-charts/

I am almost ready for day 1

I created a daily folder for each kid for their homework activities

I have printed out the review packets
I selected spelling lists for each child

I put "library" on our weekly calendar

I made a chore chart using "clean mama" printables.
  This is her weekly focus:
  M - Bathrooms
  T - Dust
  W - Vacuum
  TR - Wash Floors
  F - Catch all day
  Sat - Sheets/towels

Her theory is that every day you will "  Check floors, Wipe Counters, Clutter and at least one load of laundry.  She even has a laundry schedule!!

I took her list and made one for the kids - bear with me:

Daily:  Make bed - Pick up room
  Fold and put away clothes
  Brush teeth
  Pick Up bathroom

So in line with the weekly/daily focus I assigned these jobs to the kids:
 Monday - Clean Bathroom
   Throw down all laundry

Tuesday - Dust Your bedroom and bathroom
  Mirrors
  Window Sills
  Baseboards
  lamps
  shelves
  dresser top
  stairway

Wednesday - Vacuum
  Bedroom
  Bathroom
  Stairway

Thursday - Wash Floors
  Bathroom
  Bedroom
  Hallway
wipe down stairs (on either side of carpet)

Friday - Clean up pool toys and bonus room

THEN... I found an allowance card:

I am now reviewing a list of chores that I can assign a separate monetary value to so they can earn extra stuff.  I am thinking of possibly using those extra chores to earn time for sleepovers, video games, bowling... etc.  I'll post the list when I get it done.

WOWIE ZOWIE... I have a plan, have it organized, posted and I cannot wait until they wake up!!!

So I am printing out the 33 page review packet and looking over the other review page... http://www.mrnale.com/Review_Packets_Grade_4.htm and I really like those!

I have printed out one unit per day.  There are only one to 4 pages for each unit and I think this is EXACTLY what Corrin needs.  I am so excited.

Let me know what you are doing!

Summer 2013

I wanted to share my plans for the summer with some of my friends.

I want to do things with my friends and their kids.  I want a summer camp of sorts. I am AWESOME at coming up with ideas, but need help from my friends to make it all happen.

We are all busy and need prompting to help us enjoy what we have, remember what's important and that we are not crazy!

So, I want to post things like....
   My Schedule
   Books we are reading
   Tasks we are doing
   Projects we are working on
   Math reviews
   Spelling reviews
   Chore lists
   Bucket List!!!

So here is my plan for the week:
  8-8:30 Wake up/eat
8:30-9 Get dressed, make beds pu room etc
  9-9:30 Chores (dishes, vacuum, etc)
  9:30-10 reading
 10-10:30 math sheets
 10:30-11 Snack, Chat

This is  a rough outline, but something I hope we can streamline (no fighting or complaining) and can get everything done by 10.  I think they can, but it may take a few days!

Books we are reading... Haven't decided yet

Tasks:  Learning Chores, Learning review process, Learning to not argue with mom

Projects we are working on.... Haven't decided yet

Math Review:  Here is a link to a 4th grade review
(see link for 4th grade review packet http://www.clayton.k12.mo.us/cms/lib/MO01000419/Centricity/Domain/55/Gr4_Math_Summer_Packet_2012.pdf)  (33 pages including answers)

And here is another site by another teacher - Unit 8 is where Corrin needs a bit of help:
    http://www.mrnale.com/Review_Packets_Grade_4.htm
(unit 8 was only 3 pages)

Spelling reviews:  Haven't found yet

Chore List - will post when finalized

Bucket List:
This I will post separately because I really like my list. I think it deserves its own post.

I would love to hear what you are doing!
